The Worthington Trojans boys track and field team won the Big South Conference Large School meet on Tuesday in Marshall. WHS won with a total of 166.5 points, with Waseca second at 137.5.
The Trojans’ Fanuel Wolday won the 3200 meters with a personal-record time of 9:50.12, and Marenono Opiew captured the 300 meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 39.85 seconds. Charlie Brands had a PR of 6 feet 3 inches to win the high jump, and Abagotte Opiew had personal bests of 21 feet 8.5 inches to take the long jump and 46 feet 6 inches to win the triple jump. The Worthington 4x400 meter relay team of Mikele Walu, Filmon Wolday, Ofbeka Morke and Marenono Opiew finished first, as did the 4x800 quartet of Fanuel Wolday, Walu, Filmon Wolday and Ofbeka Morke.
In girls competition, Marshall captured first place with 182.5 points; Worthington was well behind in sixth at 37. Cassidy Madison’s fourth-place showing in the pole vault and Madi Singler’s fourth place in the long jump were the best placings of the day for the Trojans.

In high school baseball Tuesday, Blue Earth Area scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to top Worthington 9-8. Tucker Brandner had two singles a double for the Trojans and Mathias Noble, Cooper McCoy, Manny Rodriguez and Kaleb Knothe each contributed a double and single. Rodriguez had two RBIs, Noble scored three runs and Max Ostrem scored twice to go along with a pair of singles.

The Worthington Trojans have received the No. 8 seed in the Section 2AAA softball tournament and will open play in the tourney on Thursday against top-seeded Mankato East.
Game time is 5 p.m.; all tournament matchups will take place at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The winner of the Trojans-Cougars game will take on the victor of a 5 p.m. showdown between No. 4 Marshall and No. 5 St. Peter in a 7 p.m. game. The WHS-Mankato East loser will face the Tigers-Saints loser in a 7 p.m. The tournament has a double-elimination format.
Play in the tournament continues on Saturday, as well as on Tuesday, May 30 and Thursday, June 1.

Play in other sectional softball tournaments got underway Tuesday.
In Section 3AA action, it was: Luverne 10, Redwood Valley 0; Windom 4, Renville County West-BOLD 2; Jackson County Central 16, Minneota-Canby-1; Jackson County Central 9, Luverne 1; and Pipestone Area 3, Windom 1.
In Section 3A games, it was: Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 7, Murray County Central 2; and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 10, Adrian-Ellsworth 0.
In Section 2A matchups, it was: Nicollet 6, Red Rock Central-Westbrook/Walnut Grove 3; Martin County West 13, Madelia 3; Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 11l and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 1.
