Toros triumphant in first national tournament game with 2-0 win

The Worthington Toros made their United Premier Soccer League national tournament debut a winning one Sunday night.

After a scoreless first half during which Los Toros had a clear advantage in time of possession, Worthington scored twice in the second 45 minutes, and the team's virtually impenetrable defense again shut the door on the opposing offense to end up with 2-0 Round of 32 triumph over St. Croix. The Toros will play again next weekend against a foe — and at a site — to be determined.

In its fifth year of existence, Worthington Community Football Club came out strong against a well-regarded St. Croix team and created multiple scoring chances in the first half.

The first opportunity came a little less than six minutes in, when a St. Croix defender came to aid of his goalkeeper and was able to clear a Toros shot that seemed destined for the right corner of the net. Then, in the 12th minute, St. Croix's keeper dove to his left and blocked a WCFC shot to preserve a 0-0 score.

A great chance to score in the 41st minute was erased by an offsides call, and a header in the closing minute of the first half went just wide. Two more Toros shots were then blocked in extra time.

The scoreless duel finally came to end in the 66th minute, when Jose Velasquez scored from about 15 yards out while beating the St. Croix keeper to his left side. Tim Berger later iced the game in the 88th minute when he scored from close range following a beautiful pass from Pablo Martin Domingo.
