Trojans edged in girls soccer season opener; Lady Jays VB goes 4-0

In girls soccer Saturday afternoon, the Worthington Trojans opened their season with a 1-0 home loss to Garretson, S.D.

The WHS defense stymied Garretson on multiple first-half opportunities until Leighton Kindopp got the Blue Dragons on the board with a little less than 4:30 remaining in the half.

The Trojans struggled to create chances on offense in the first half, but improved over the second 40 minutes. Emily Deleon excelled at goalkeeper for Worthington during the game, and Shayla Juarez led a strong WHS defensive unit.

The Minnesota West volleyball team won all four of its matches over the weekend at the Crossover Tournament at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

The Lady Jays, ranked fifth in NJCAA Division 3 volleyball, won each of their matches 3-0. Minnesota West defeated Minnesota North-Mesabi Range and Alexandria on Friday before shutting out both Minnesota North-Vermilion and Minnesota North-Rainy River on Saturday.

Next up for the Lady Jays, now 7-1 this season, are four matches this coming Friday and Saturday at a tournament in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The first home match for Minnesota West is a week from Wednesday against Riverland.

Minnesota West’s men’s soccer team opened its season Saturday, and it was defeated at home 5-1 by Alexandria. The Bluejays are idle until Sept. 9, when they host Anoka-Ramsey.

In high school football Friday night, Class 2A Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley and Class 1A Sibley-Ocheyedan played to a 0-0 tie through almost the entire first half, but the Nighthawks got a one-yard TD on a quarterback sneak with 17 seconds to go before the break for a 7-0 lead. B-H/RV then went on to dominate the second half and top the Generals, 34-7.

S-O got its lone score halfway through the third quarter when Hunter Kauffman connected with Aiden Kruger on a 26-yard TD pass. Kauffman rushed for 117 yards on the ground in the game. Avery Maker had a team-high seven tackles for the Generals.

The Worthington Trojans' volleyball team played a total of five matches Saturday in a tournament in Rochester, winning three while losing two.

The Trojans earned all three of their triumphs by sweeping best-of-three matches. WHS picked up 2-0 victories over Class A New Ulm Cathedral, Class 2A Blooming Prairie and Class 3A Minneapolis Southwest. Both losses came by 2-0 and were to a pair of Class 3A schools, Rochester Century and Mankato East.

Wortthington, following its season-opening win on Thursday at Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, is now 4-2 on the season. The Trojans play at Tri-City United on Tuesday.

In high school girls tennis Thursday, Worthington lost at Fairmont 7-0. All of the matches were decided in straight sets with the exception of No. 2 singles, where the Trojans’ Kah Blu Moo was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. WHS then finished third of four teams with 131 total points won in a home meet Saturday.
