The Marshall Tigers scored a goal in each half Thursday night and their tight defense kept the Worthington Trojans off the scoreboard as Marshall defeated Worthington 2-0 in a Section 2AA boys soccer semifinal game at SMSU.
The Trojans and Tigers battled to a scoreless draw for a little more than half of the first 40 minutes before Moo Gay fed Samuel Foster for a goal after WHS failed to clear a ball deep in its own side of the field. Marshall almost scored again shortly thereafter, but the Trojans kept the Tigers’ lead at a goal while controlling possession for a majority of the half.
With 1:50 to go in the half, an altercation between Marshall’s Isaiah Arguetta and Maqui Sandoval ultimately led to a red card for Sandoval. In the second half, both teams continued their fast and physical play, but was the Tigers breaking through with a second goal when Gay scored with 19:27 remaining.
Second-seeded Marshall improves to 14-2-2 on the season and will play No, 1 Mankato East for the section title and a state tournament berth Tuesday in New Prague. Worthington, the sectional champion for the past three years, had its season end with an 11-4-3 record.
