Talcot Lake WMA fire burns 170 acres

The Fulda Fire Department and others battled a fire Saturday afternoon in Talcot Lake Wildlife Management Area.

Murray County Sheriff's Office deputies alerted the dispatch center of a fire in the Talcot Lake Wildlife Management Area at approximately 4:20 p.m. Saturday. The Fulda Fire Department was paged and responded. The National Weather Service detected a possible wildfire via sattelilte at 4:25 p.m. six miles north of Dundee in Murray County.

Additional firefighting resources were requested; response efforts were difficult due to the terrain. The fire burned various grasses, cattails and some wooded areas. Dry conditions, low humidity and gusty winds made containing the fire difficult.

Firefighting resources included engines, grass rigs, ATV's, tanker/tenders, additional manpower and aircraft. Among those assisting at the scene were the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Department of Natural Resouces, Minnesota State Patrol, Slayton Fire Department, Dovray Fire Department, Westbrook Fire Department, Tracy Fire Department, Beeck's Gravel and Excavating, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls and Noomen Enterprises.

An estimated 170 acres burned.
