State-bound Luverne to play Milroy in amateur baseball playoffs

The Luverne Redbirds are headed to the Minnesota Amateur Baseball State Tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

Luverne, which sports a record of 27-3 this season, won 12-0 in seven innings at home on Sunday to capture a best-of-three series against Fairmont, two games to one. The Redbirds had won the series opener 12-2 on Aug. 3 before Fairmont took Game Two 6-5 on Friday. On Sunday, Cade Wenninger pitched a complete-game shutout while surrendering just three hits.

The Redbirds now face a Milroy team that knocked out the Hadley Buttermakers in a just-concluded series, two games to one. Milroy took Game One 1-0 on Aug. 3, and Hadley then finished off a rain-delayed Game 2 triumph on Monday before Milroy was victorious 10-1 in the Game 3 that immediately followed.

Luverne and Milroy meet in Game One on Wednesday night at The Irish Yard. Hadley and Fairmont, meanwhile, will play a three-game series of their own to determine the third and final state tournament qualifier from Region 13C.
