Sports Roundup: May 19, 2022

The Worthington Trojans girls golf team defeated Murray County Central 211-219 in a match at Slayton on Thursday, while the boys team went up against an incomplete MCC squad.


In girls play, Lilly Mahlberg once again captured medalist honors by shooting a 48. Tarren Spartz was next for WHS with a 53, followed by Mia Nixon and Kendall Nixon, who each had 55s. Ciera Tutt had the lowest round for the Rebels at 53.


The Trojan boys were led Thursday by Taylor Jaycox, who was medalist with a 45. Andrew Mulder had a 47, Spenser Braaksma a 48 and Andrew Dorcey a 51. McKade Gillette’s 51 was best for MCC.


The girls will next play at sectionals on May 25, and the boys are at sectionals on May 26.

In high school baseball, WHS fought back from a 9-3 deficit before losing to host Jackson County Central 10-8 on Thursday.


Coy Turner had two doubles and Tristan Sauerbrei and Mathias Noble each had a double and single for the Trojans, who collected 11 hits as a team. Isaiah Noble had a triple for Worthington, and Tucker Brandner had two RBIs.


Cooper McCoy and Sauerbrei split the pitching duties for WHS, with each going three innings. The Trojans’ record is now 4-14.

Student-athletes from across northwest Iowa began competition Thursday at the Iowa State High School Track and Field meet, which continues through Saturday in Des Moines.
