Spirit Lake man injured in car-vs.-semi collision along Iowa 9

One person was injured in a crash late Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Iowa 9 and 219th Avenue on the west edge of Spirit Lake.

According to the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, a 2009 Ford Explorer operated by Michael Elgersma, 69, of Spirit Lake was eastbound and a 2020 Freightliner semi tractor/trailer operated by Lawrence Johnson, 63, of Worthing, S.D., was crossing the eastbound lane from 219th Avenue to turn west onto Iowa 9 when the collision occurred.

Elgersma was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare with non-incapacitating injuries. Johnson was unhurt. The crash was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The vehicle driven by Elgersma was totaled; about $4,000 in damage was estimated to the semi trailer. The Spirit Lake Police Department, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance, Spirit Lake First Responders and Spirit Lake Fire Department assisted at the scene.
