UPDATE: Several area Class A track and field athletes excel at state

Alabama Hoonhorst of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda finished in second place in the discus following competition Tuesday at the Minnesota Class A Track and Field Meet.


Hoonhorst, a sophomore, set a personal record with a throw of 129 feet, 11 inches.


Another top finisher among area athletes was Quinn Landherr of Jackson County Central, who competed in the boys' pole vault. Landherr completed competition in the event on Tuesday by tying for fourth with a personal best of 13 feet, 6 inches.


Other Huskies athletes did well enough to advance to finals rounds slated for Wednesday.


In the boys' 200 meters, Ben Dahlin of JCC qualified for the finals by finishing fourth with a time of 22.17 seconds. The 200 finals are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.


In the boys' 110-meter high hurdles, the Huskies' Clay Malchow also moved onward by placing sixth with a clocking of 15.25 seconds. The finals for his event are set for 4:38 p.m. Wednesday. 


In the boys' 4x200-meter relay, the Huskies' quartet of Isaac Hesebeck, Dahlin, Malchow and Landherr moved on to the finals by placing eighth with a time of 1 minute, 30.37 seconds. They'll compete again at 5:17 p.m.


Also Tuesday, In the girls' long jump, JCC's Rylie Cother placed in 11th. In the high jump, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda's Rebecca Cheadle was 21st and Cother was 29th.


In the girls 4x200-meter relay, the Huskies' foursome of Allison Luebben, Natalia Botello-Ramos, Stevie Untiedt and Zoey Hall was 20th.

Class AA action starts Wednesday and continues Thursday. All classes of the state meet are taking place at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

The Worthington Senior American Legion baseball team trailed 13-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night but wound up bringing the tying run to the plate before ultimately falling to Windom, 13-9.


The loss dropped Post 5 to 2-1 on the season. Worthington picked up just three hits on the night but collected 14 walks. Tucker Brandner, Austin Gruis and Dalton Larson each had singles and RBIs in the game.


Brandner pitched the first four innings, allowing six runs -- just two were earned — while walking two and striking out nine. Larson tossed the next two innings, and Ethan Anderson pitched the seventh. Windom, which got 16 hits against Post 5, made a 9-4 game 13-4 in that inning, but Worthington wouldn't quit.


On Monday night, Worthington rallied from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 9-8 victory over Jackson.


Post 5 tallied four runs in the third to grab a 5-3 edge, but multiple errors helped Jackson score five times in the fourth. The contest remained at 8-5 until the sixth, when Manny Saravia tripled and then came home on Austin Gruis' game-winning RBI double.


Max Ostrem and Saravia each went 3-for-4 with a single, double, triple and three RBIs. Dawson Svalland added a pair of singles in three at bats and also drove in three runs.


Logan Kerkaert pitched the first four innings for Worthington, allowing two earned runs and walking just one batter. Larson blanked Jackson in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the win on the mound. Ostrem tossed the seventh for the save, walking one and striking out three.


Post 5 plays at Pipestone on Thursday night.
