Results from area contested races are available

We've got a lot more regional results from Election Night to share.


In Jackson County, voters have chosen change in several election races. Ward 1 seats on the Jackson City Council were won by two newcomers, Shawn Foster and Mike Schwartz. Foster picked up 536 votes, or 37.46%, and Schwartz garnered 467 votes, or 32.63%. They outdistanced incumbent Chris Naumann, who had 422 votes or 29.49%.


Also elected to the Jackson City Council in Ward 2 was John Weland, who was challenging incumbent Sara Mix. Weland had 416 votes, or 56.06%, while Mix had 319 votes, or 42.99%.


At the county level, Kent Bargfrede won the District 1 Jackson County Board of Commissioners race over incumbent Scott McClure by a margin of 64% to 35%. Larry Liepold, running unopposed, will assume the District Five seat on currently held by James Eigenberg, who did not seek re-election.


Voters in the Jackson County Central School District picked Corey Hanson, Troy Schultz, Betty Hargan and Tina Polz over three others in the race, including Shelley R. Pohlman, Danni Swanson and Matt Madden. Current board members Jody Thrush Withers and Amy Voss did not file for re-election.

In Windom, that community's incumbent mayor suffered a decisive setback in his bid for reelection.


Dominic Jones, up against two opponents, wound up with just 15.58% of the vote Tuesday. Hilary Mathis was elected as Windom's mayor by garnering 1,016 votes, or 47.26% of the total. Jenny Quade was next with 792 votes, or 36.84%, followed by Jones with 335 votes.


In a three-person race in Windom City Council Ward 1, incumbent Jayesun Sherman was elected to a third term. Sherman received 497 votes, or 43.56% of the vote total. Nathanial Bjorklund was second with 350 votes, or 30.67%, and Tanya Smith had 291, or 25.5%.


In a three-way matchup in Windom City Council Ward 2, Scott Benson was re-elected with a total of 509 votes, or 58.71%. Mari Harries had 218 votes, or 25.14%,  while Loren Liepold had 136, or 15.69%.


Another item on the city ballot was a question regarding a 1% sales tax to help offset flooding and drainage issues in the community. That failed by a count of 1,080-1056.


For Windom's school board, four of five candidates were elected. Matt Steffen picked up 1,889 votes, or 23.02%, to lead the way. Joel Bordewyk had 1,828 votes, or 22.27%, and was followed by Lynn Jensen Liepold with 1,509 (or 18.39%) and Barbara Jones with 1,482 (or 18.06%). Charles Pineda trailed with 1,465 votes, or 17.85%.

In the race for a Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners District 4 seat, Wayne Maras got 649 votes (53.86%) to defeat Richard Gisch — he had 555 votes (46.06%).

Murray County voters elected two new county commissioners Tuesday night.

In District 2, Mark K. Carlson earned 725 votes — or 75.92% of the total — and defeated Trevor J,. Humphrey.  In District 5, Roger Zins captured 527 votes — or 68.8% -- in winning over Randy Donahue.


Also in Murray County, there was a race for Fulda mayor. Jim Brown was elected in that community with 370 votes, or 57.9%. Tim Roberts had 259 votes, or 40.53%.

Within Nobles County, a spot on the Ellsworth City Council went to Michael Lewis. He had 188 votes, or 52.08%, in defeating incumbent Tonya Zitzloff, who picked up 158 votes, or 43.77%.


In Brewster, two of four candidates were elected to the Brewster City Council. Robert McNab was the top vote-getter at 131, followed by Edward Busch at 108. Trailing were Michael Heidelberger at 101 votes and Radley Hennings with 61.

In Lismore, voters picked two of three candidates for city council. Kenneth Leinen had 89 votes and Austin Garms 69; trailing was Chaz Kohorst at 35.
