One injured, fire truck and pickup are totaled after weekend crash

An 11-year-girl was injured and a Melvin, Iowa fire truck was totaled after a crash Saturday near Hartley, Iowa.

According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, a 2006 Chevy pickup operated by a 16-year-old male from Hartley was westbound on a driveway in the 2700 block of Vine Avenue. A 1999 Chevy fire truck operated by Philip Krogman, 41, of Melvin was southbound on Vine Avenue, and a 2019 Chevy pickup operated by Paul Ahrenstorff, 40, was northbound on Vine Avenue. The report states the Hartley teen was exiting the driveway, and the northbound pickup stopped to let him pass. The teen then pulled into the path of the southbound fire truck, resulting in a collision. The crash was reported at approximately 9:35 a.m. Saturday.

The fire truck drove partially up the side of the pickup and landed on its side in the west ditch. The Chevrolet pickup driven by the teen was pushed sideways into the northbound pickup.

An 11-year-old girl who was a passenger in the fire truck was taken to the Sheldon hospital. The pickup the teen was driving was also totaled; the pickup driven by Ahrenstorff sustained an estimated $20,000 in damage.
