Minnesota West women win at Ridgewater while men are beaten

The Minnesota West Lady Jays improved to 5-0 in conference play and 16-5 overall by defeating Ridgewater 81-61 on Wednesday night in Willmar.


Top-ranked Minnesota West led by 13 at halftime and was up by 22 at the end of the third quarter. Katrina Schutz had a strong outing as she finished with team highs of 20 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Sadie Krahling added 19 points for Minnesota West, Maddie Kamm and Payton Riemers contributed 11 points apiece and Katelyn Frodermann chipped in with 10 points.


The Lady Jays limited Ridgewater to 35% shooting while also outrebounding the Warriors 43-28. Minnesota West made 45% of shots from the floor and made all 19 of its free throw attempts.


In the men's game, the Bluejays led 43-34 at the half but were outscored 56-41 after that as they fell to Ridgewater 90-84. The loss, Minnesota West's eighth in the last nine games, dropped the team to 1-4 in conference play and 9-11 overall.


The Warriors outrebounded the Bluejays 47-31 on the night and made 19-of-22 free throws compared to 11-of-14 for Minn. West. Kewone Jones scored 23 points to lead the Bluejays offensively. Keion Irvin and Rilpuou Machol had 15 points each, and Calvin Flood added 11.


The Minnesota West women and men will both play at Minnesota State-Fergus Falls on Saturday. The women's matchup will tip off at 1 p.m. with the men to follow.

The Worthington High School wrestling team competed at a four-team event at Dawson-Boyd on Tuesday and was defeated in its match against Minneota 60-10.


Minneota picked up exactly half of its 60-point total via five forfeits. The Vikings also won three matches by fall and another by technical fall for 23 more points.


The Trojans got six points via a forfeit victory for Dalton Larson at 215 pounds. The other four points came from 152-pounder Kian Ling, who earned a triumph by major decision.


WHS is scheduled to compete in a triangular meet tonight in Pipestone.

Both the girls and boys hockey teams will also be back in action tonight as they'll host Luverne in a doubleheader at the Worthington Ice Arena. The girls game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., with the boys matchup to follow.


The Trojan girls, who have a record of 8-13 following their 2-1 Tuesday loss to Fairmont, are nearly done with their regular season. After tonight's game, they'll face visiting Prairie Centre on Friday night. Their next outing will be next Thursday in the sectional tournament.


The Worthington boys now have a season mark of 2-18 following an 11-6 Tuesday loss at Fairmont. The Trojans had a 2-1 first-period lead in the game after goals from Noahh Hohenstein and Dominic Pavelko, but the Cardinals tallied the next seven goals. Pavelko did finish the night with a hat trick for WHS; Hunter Heitkamp and Colby Darling also scored.
