Minnesota West swept in home basketball twinbill

Minnesota State Community & Technical College of Fergus Falls won both games of a basketball doubleheader Wednesday against Minnesota West at the Center for Health and Wellness.

 

In the women’s ballgame, the Spartans trailed by five at the half but then came back to defeat the Lady Jays 84-78. Jayna Gronewold scored 26 points for Fergus Falls, including a two-thirds-of-the-court 3-pointer to beat the third-quarter buzzer. Gronewold made all 12 of her shots from the free-throw line as the Spartans connected on 23 of 27 from there as a team. Minnesota West was just 13 of 23 on free throws.

 

Olivia Hayenga had 22 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals for the Lady Jays before she fouled out in the latter stages of the fourth quarter. Dasia Potter contributed 17 points off the bench, and Skylla Petersen added 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Hattie DeVries chipped in with 13 points and five assists.

 

Fergus Falls outrebounded Minnesota West 44-25 in the game. The Lady Jays also committed 26 turnovers in falling to 11-6 overall in their MCAC South Division opener.

 

In the men’s matchup, Fergus Falls grabbed a 46-20 halftime lead on Minnesota West and won 83-63. The Bluejays were able to close the deficit to 11 but got no closer. Tyson McArthur hit for 30 points to boost the Spartans.

 

Kenneth Logan made 8-of-12 shots from the field and had 23 points to lead Minnesota West. Jordan Sinclair contributed 15 points as the Bluejays fell to 2-11 on the year.
