Minnesota West outlasts Rochester in five-set VB match

Kiarra Danielson put down the winning kill in a back-and-forth fifth set Wednesday night and the Minnesota West Lady Jays outlasted Rochester 3-2 in an MCAC women’s volleyball match at the Center for Health and Wellness in Worthington. Game scores were 23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 16-25, 16-14.


Neither team led by more than two points in the final set, which saw Minnesota West close out the win to improve to 8-1 on the season. The Bluejays were able to capture the triumph despite a flat fourth set in which Rochester tied up the match at 2-2.


Danielson finished Wednesday’s match with seven kills, 25-of-26 serving and three ace serves, five blocks and 19 digs. Ella Hesse was a huge contributor with 10 kills and 35 digs as well as a 23-for-23 serving effort, and Ella Kamrud led the team in kills with 11. Lexi Schreuers added 35 set assists and 18 digs and also chipped in with five kills. Shawna Rogers had 20 digs and two ace serves, and Kat Polzine added seven kills and five blocks.


The Lady Jays will next play back-to-back road matches on Friday and Saturday, first at Riverland and then at Western Technical College.

The Minnesota West men’s soccer team was edged 2-1 at Anoka-Ramsey on Wednesday to drop to 2-2-1 on the year. The Bluejays will be in action at 2 p.m. Saturday at Buss Field against the Dordt junior varsity.
