Minnesota West baseball 4-0, softball 2-0 on weekend

The Minnesota West baseball team went 4-0 in home games played Friday and Saturday against Minnesota Post Grad.

 

On Friday, the Bluejays won their opening contest 5-1 and then scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take game two 10-9. Axell Espino had a pair of hits for Minnesota West in the first game, and Joe Zhu had a triple for the squad’s lone extra-base hit. Jordan Bauer threw a complete game for the pitching win.

 

In Friday’s second game, Espino connected for two singles and a double while driving in three runs and scoring three times. Haruto Endo was on a base four times with two singles and two walks. Robert Reyes contributed a triple and got the final two outs in the top of the seventh to earn the mound victory.

 

On Saturday, the Bluejays were triumphant by scores of 7-4 and 8-7. Minnesota West won the first one despite managing just five hits. In the second matchup, Espino had three hits and three RBIs, including a walk-off two-run double.

 

Minnesota West is now 9-11 on the season.

The Lady Jays posted a pair of softball victories on Saturday, beating visiting Minnesota State-Fergus Falls by scores of 12-10 and 19-12.

 

In the first game, Makenzie Allen led the Minnesota West offense with two singles, a double and a triple; she also scored four times and drove home a pair of runs. Keytin Elser contributed a double and two singles, scoring twice and driving in two. Olivia Hensch added two doubles and two RBI, and Sondra Rindfleisch added two hits – including a home run – to go along with three RBIs.

 

Allen swung a hot bat once again in game two with a pair of singles, a double and a triple while also scoring four runs. Elser had a single, two doubles and home run while scoring four times and driving in three runs. Rindfleisch had a single, double and homer; she drove in four runs and scored twice.

 

The Lady Jays, now 3-2, host Rochester in a doubleheader Tuesday.
