The first of two community meetings regarding the Murray County Central School District referendum will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the MCC Auditorium.
The MCC Board of Education voted unanimously in July to hold a special election on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Voters will be asked to consider an operating levy increase -- revoking and replacing what is currently in place) to help sustain education in the district.
According to the school district's website, the district has already made budget reductions, including instructional positions not being replaced due to retirements, reductions in elementary, secondary, and special education teaching areas; reductions to staff in community education, reductions to athletic/activity programming, and reductions to hourly staff and transportation. Administration staff are taking on additional duties as a result of the cuts.
If approved, the estimated tax impact would be about an additional $171 per year ($14.25 per month) on a home valued at $150,000. A tax calculator can be found on the school district web page.
A second meeting on the referendum has also been scheduled for Oct. 22.
