The Jackson County Sheriff's Office on Saturday investigated an incident during which a man apparently shot himself and died.
According to a press release, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office was notified by family members of a 60-year-old adult male from Kelliher who was reported to be suicidal and possibly armed on a riverbank somewhere in Jackson County. The call was received at about 8 a.m. Saturday.
Deputies began searching the Des Moines River area and located a matching vehicle parked on the edge of Blackbridge Road under the Interstate 90 overpass northwest of Jackson. Shortly thereafter, deputies also located the male on the shoreline of the Des Moines River armed with a pistol threatening suicide.
Deputies closed off a one-mile section of Blackbridge Road, and the Jackson Ambulance was placed on standby. Deputies also began negotiating with the male. About four hours later, a gunshot was heard from the riverbank. Deputies located the male, who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, and a pistol was found nearby.
The man, whose name had yet to be released, was transported to the Jackson Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The sheriff's office was assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Jackson Ambulance and Jackson Fire Department.
