Local Sports Roundup: May 7, 2023

The Worthington Trojans tennis team had a home meet on Friday and earned a 6-1 triumph over Pipestone Area.


No. 1 singles player Ian Barber recorded a 6-1 6-0 victory for the Trojans, while teammate Ezra Bonnett picked up a 6-1 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Evan Hansberger also came out on top for WHS at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1 6-4.


Worthington won each of its doubles matches via forfeit, as Pipestone Area didn’t have enough players for those matches.

The Worthington Trojans girls golf team placed third Saturday at the 23 Girls Cardinal Invite at Rose Lake. Redwood Valley finished first with a team score of 338, followed by Fairmont at 359 and Worthington at 366.


Trojans head coach Brooke Hermsen had five members of her team shot their best round of the year Saturday. Madison Beckmann’s 86 was good enough for seventh overall, while Lilly Mahlberg’s 87 placed her ninth. Tarren Spartz had a 96 for 17th place and Claire Mahlberg a round of 100 for 23rd. Ellie Weg had a 103 to place 29th overall.


In boys golf Saturday, the Trojans wound up finishing in seventh place at the 23 Boys Cardinal Invite at Interlaken. Minnewaska Area won the meet with a team total of 314 strokes with Luverne right behind at 316. Worthington had a team score of 350.


Leading the way for the Worthington boys was Tyler Jaycox, who fired a round of 82. Also competing for the Trojans were Logan Powers at 86, Andrew Mulder at 91, Spenser Braaksma at 91, Spenser Nickel at 100 and Waylon Crooks at 106.

Abagotte Opiew of Worthington High School finished first in the triple jump during the past weekend’s prestigious Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls, leaping 44 feet and 11.5 inches. He also tied for fifth in the long jump at 21 feet and five and a quarter inches.

The Worthington Community Football Club Toros were defeated Sunday afternoon in their second United Premier Soccer League match of the season as they lost 5-0 to the St. Croix Football Club in Stillwater. The Toros, who trailed 3-0 at the half, will next play on Saturday, May 13 at the Superior Soccer Club.
