Levi Smith wins Labor Day golf tourney in one-hole playoff

Levi Smith of Alexandria edged Jerry Freimuth of Worthington in a one-hole playoff early Monday evening to capture the Labor Day Classic Golf Tournament at GreatLIFE Worthington.
Smith, who grew up in Sioux Falls, and Freimuth both completed Monday's 18-hole Final Four round at two-over-par 73. Brett Benson was a stroke back at 74 and Max Tylke was at 75.
Smith was in fourth after the first nine holes in the final round at three-over 38, but was one-under on the back nine. Freimuth and Tylke both had 36s on the front; Benson had a 37.

The Minnesota West volleyball team went 3-1 Friday and Saturday at the Siouxland Tournament in Sioux City, with its only loss coming at the hands of Division 1 Highland Community College.
The Lady Jays, who are ranked third in NJCAA Division 3, topped Division 1 Ellsworth on Friday by scores of 29-21, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22, then lost to Highland by scores of 25-20, 10-25, 20-25, 23-25. On Saturday, Minnesota West beat Division 1 Labette Community College 25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19, and then won over Division 2 Western Iowa Tech 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.
Leading the way in kills for the Lady Jays was Sadie Krahling, who saw action for the first time this season and had 42 over the course of the four matches. Raya Van Beek was next with 35.
In digs, Kadyn Paulson topped Minnesota West with a total of 89 in the four matches. Lydia Moore added 40 total digs. In blocks, Van Beek and Hannah Dauer had eight apiece, and Paulson and Liv Locke contributed four ace serves each.
Kate Slettum accumulated 125 set assists in the four matches for the Lady Jays, now 7-1 on the year. Their next match is Wednesday at Century College.

The Minnesota West football team, ranked fifth in the NJCAA Division III preseason poll. went up against four-time defending national champion College of DuPage on Saturday to open its season and were beaten 37-7 at Trojan Field.
The Bluejays' lone touchdown came on a 35-yard pass play between quarterback Armon Vinson and Ethan Pridgen that tied the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter. The visiting Chapparals went on to lead 21-7 at the half and then continued to keep Minnesota West at bay the rest of the way. DuPage accumulated 538 total yards in the game compared to the Bluejays' 339.
Vinson completed 15-of-29 passes for 261 yards, one TD and two interceptions. Talik Brooks had five catches for 97 yards for the Bluejays, and Jaylen Neely led the ground game with 16 carries for 62 yards. Justin Spears had 15 total tackles and Darron Millender had 11.
Minnesota West is on the road this Saturday to face Minnesota State-Fergus Falls.

Minnesota West's men's soccer team, playing its first counting match of the season Saturday following a pair of scrimmages, topped Alexandria Tech 5-2 at Trojan Field.
Alexandria had a 1-0 edge on the Blue Jays at intermission, but Dario Neves tied things up for the home squad just two minutes into the second half. Carlos Castillo scored a pair of goals and Leon Braun had one of his own to make it 4-1, and after Alexandria got one back, Paulo Fonte got one more for the Bluejays with a minute remaining.
Minnesota West next plays Wednesday at Iowa Central.

In boys soccer Friday night, the Worthington Trojans bounced back from a lackluster Thursday performance by beating Southwest Minnesota Christian 6-2.
WHS, which evened its season record at 2-2, entered the second half tied with the Eagles at two-apiece. The Trojans, however, got four goals in just a little more than nine minutes to start the half and continued to dictate the action the rest of the way.
Danny Banegas and Andy Guzman each scored twice for Worthington, and Chriss Chavez and Eiby Martinez chipped in with a goal each. WHS hosts Marshall at 7 p.m. Tuesday; catch the action on 104.3 La Voz.

In high school football Friday, the Trojans traveled to Fairmont for their season opener and were beaten by the Cardinals 47-0.
Fino Noeno was responsible for at least a couple of highlights, as he picked off a pair of passes for Worthington. Dalton Larson had a combined 15 tackles, and Miguel Moreno had 53 yards rushing to top the Trojan offense.
WHS will play host to St. Peter on Friday evening.
