International Festival to run this evening though Saturday

Worthington's 30th annual International Festival gets underway tonight and continues through Sunday.


Tonight's activities will take place at Memorial Auditorium and begin at 5:30 p.m. with interactive drumming by Purpose Artisans. Food and social hour start at 6 p.m., with a $1 ticket for samples. The film "He Named Me Malala" will be screened at 7 p.m., with a discussion panel to follow.


On Friday and Saturday, all events are scheduled to take place on Sailboard Beach instead of the normal location in front of the Nobles County Administration Building. The opening ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes a welcome by Mayor Rick von Holdt and the traditional "flags of the world" presentation. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. and includes Salsa del Soul, the youth Mexican band Los Vandettas and a native fashion show.


Activities on Saturday commence at 10:15 a.m. with warm-up Zumba. Latin dance lessons are scheduled for 10:50 a.m., and Wakpa Iksan Singers – a Native American group – are set for 11:25 a.m. Ethnic Dance Theatre is scheduled for noon, with classical music from Son de Cuerdas on the stage at 1 p.m. and Karen Community performers at 1:45 p.m.


Anuak dancers, followed by Aztec dancers, perform between 2:10 and 3:05 p.m. After youth artists Mikeayla Engidaw, Harmony Hall and Helmae Hall are featured, the German group Concord Singers will entertain at 3:20 to 3:55 p.m. and 4:25 to 5:10 p.m. In between, Oromo dancers will take the stage. 


Among other entertainment Saturday is Ethiopian music by Negalign at 5:25 p.m. Worthington artist Savanah Rodriguez at 6:25 p.m. and reggae from Dred I Dread at 7 p.m. The free-admission festival also includes multiple artisan booths, children's activities and food vendors.
