Sanford Worthington, the Nobles County Sheriff’s Office, Worthington Police Department EMS, Fire Department and Community Blood Bank will host the annual Heroes Behind the Badges blood drive event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Sanford Worthington.
Local blood supplies are at a critically low status, as many people are seeking medical care after the lifting of restrictions following the COVID-19 shutdown.
“This friendly competition is a way to support your local heroes and local blood supply during the critical summer months,” said Ken Versteeg, executive director of the Community Blood Bank. “The only way to increase the blood supply for local patients is through volunteer blood donors to schedule their donation for the upcoming blood drive at the Worthington Heroes Behind the Badges blood drive.”
Versteeg added that there have been times during the past six weeks in which there have been extreme concerns about meeting blood supply demand. He noted that at this point, Community Blood Bank is using 18% to 30% more blood week than prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donors must be at least 17 (16 with a signed parent consent form found at cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good general health. Donors exhibiting cold or flu symptoms are unable to donate. A valid identification is required at the time of registration.
