A group of former Worthington High School educators, coaches and friends are working to raise funds for a memorial to honor Leo Peterson, a former teacher and baseball coach for the Worthington Trojans.
The Worthington Area Youth Baseball Association organizes and administrates youth baseball opportunities for Worthington youths ages 7-18. WAYBA started renovating its main field approximately three years ago while making plans to add amenities to improve the fan experience. WAYBA’s goal for the project is to create a field that every kid would dream of playing on and one that the community can call its own.
Peterson had a love for teaching, his community and the sport of baseball during his 30 years in Worthington, which spanned from 1966 to 1996. He recently passed away, and WAYBA is hoping to sponsor a bench, picnic table or something else needed at the field to commemorate Peterson’s contribution to the sport.
Donations can be made at First State Bank Southwest – located at 1433 Oxford Street, Worthington – in the WAYBA account. Contributions can also be made via Venmo to Worthington-Baseball (code 5261) with “Leo Peterson donation” in the memo. People are asked to consider making donations by Aug. 10. The Hales, Vorwalds, Kuipers and Larry Petersen family are being credited with having the energy behind the tribute idea for Peterson.
