Firefighters called to two Brewster fires on Saturday

The Brewster Fire Department was kept busy this past weekend as it battled a pair of fires.

Fire Chief John Garmer said Monday that the department’s firefighters were dispatched at 1:14 a.m. Saturday to a home in at 412 Ninth St. No one was home at the time of the fire, which had engulfed the back half of the structure upon firefighters’ arrival.

Firefighters were at the scene of the blaze until approximately 6 a.m. The Worthington Fire Department was called for mutual aid, with its ladder truck requested. The fire is thought to have originated in the lower level toward the rear of the home, which is a total loss and will need to be torn down.

Later Saturday, Brewster firefighters were called at 1:18 p.m. Saturday to a homestead near the intersection of 210th Street and Wass Avenue. Garmer said the fire was a controlled burn that had gotten out of control and spread to a grove. As multiple Brewster firefighters had returned to the scene of the Ninth Street house fire for a flare-up, the Worthington Fire Department was dispatched to the grove fire.

No one was injured as a result of either fire.
