Election results: School bond measures pass in NW Iowa

In northwest Iowa on Tuesday, voters in the Harris-Lake Park School District approved a public measure that will result in the building of an elementary addition to the middle school/high school building, as well as renovate portions of the middle school/high school building and construct athletic improvements and facilities at the site.

The measure, which required 60% support for approval, received 564 votes, or 71.3% of those cast. The outcome allows for general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $18.6 million to be issued for the project.

Osceola County voters also approved a public measure that will result in a $5 million bond that would pay for expansion and remodeling of the county’s law enforcement center.

With 60% “yes” votes again necessary for passage, there were 762 votes – or 65.85% -- in favor. The plan includes improved accommodations for inmates, modern office spaces for law enforcement staff and more room for emergency management and parole services. The measure increases the county’s property taxes at a rate of $2.69 per month per $100,000.

Yet another public measure to help a school district grow was passed in Sheldon, where 1,080 voters -- or 70.45% -- were supported a bond worth $19.16 million that would add 10 classrooms to the high school building, renovate existing space, improve security, create new band and choir rooms and more. A bond measure in the West Lyon school district also passed with 1,042 votes – or 68.55% -- in favor.

To the north, voters in the city of Marshall approved a ballot question Tuesday that result in funding for construction of a new municipal aquatic center in the city.

A total of 1,455 “yes” votes – or 66.44% of those cast – were in support of the question, which asked that the city be authorized to extend a sales and use tax of one half of one percent toward construction of the new aquatic center. Approval of the question also allows the city to issue general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $18,370,000 (plus the cost of issuing the bonds and including interest on the bonds) for the new facility.

Election results from the Adrian and Worthington school districts were not yet available late Tuesday evening.
