District 518 hosts groundbreaking for new softball facility

Worthington Independent School District 518 on Thursday morning hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new softball complex.

District 518 Superintendent Joel Heitkamp offered remarks at the event, stating that project reflects the district's commitment "to providing student-athletes with a first-class facility that matches the dedication, hard work and pride they bring to the field every day." He said the new facility will allow the community to host athletic events and tournaments that attract people from across the region to Worthington.

Added Heitkamp: "Today's groundbreaking is also a celebration of partnership. This project is the result of a strong collaboration between Worthington Public Schools and the City of Worthington. Together, we recognized the opportunity to create something that serves both our students and the broader community. The existing fields across the street from our field, with the addition of the new city building for restrooms and concessions, allow this complex to be one of the best around."

The new softball complex will stand alongside Centennial Park, the beach and Beach Nook, pickleball courts, basketball courts and the skate park.

Said Heikamp: "It completes and enhances a space that already draws people together to play, compete, relax, and connect. The result will be a destination that benefits our students, our residents, and visitors for years to come."

The field also provides a connection to the greater agricultural community by having the very first bio-based artificial turf in the state.
