District 518 announces donations for softball field in midst of being built

Worthington Independent School District 518 has issued a press release that states the district is proud to announce generous donations totaling $15,000 in support of soybean-based artificial turf for the district's new softball field.

The Nobles County Corn and Soybean Growers Association contributed $10,000 and Minnesota Soybean Processors contributed $5,000 toward what the press release calls "this forward-thinking project, one that enhances athletic facilities for student-athletes while connecting the community to the agricultural innovations happening right in their own backyard."

The funds will be used to install AstroTurf, incorporating soybean-derived materials, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional petroleum-based components. The upgraded surface will provide student-athletes with a more durable, weather-resistant playing field while showcasing the real-world benefits of agricultural innovation.

"We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Nobles County Corn and Soybean Growers Association and Minnesota Soybean Processors," said Joel Heitkamp, Superintendent of Worthington District 518. "This project not only improves our athletic facilities; it connects our students to the importance of sustainability and innovation in agriculture, which is essential to our community."

The project also benefits from a unique local partnership. Students at Worthington High School, along with Minnesota West Community and Technical College students, will engage in planting and harvesting the District's Ag Lab farm ground each year. Through strategic crop marketing, the Ag Lab is expected to contribute an additional $10,000 in proceeds toward the Trojan Softball Complex, bringing the additional total community investment to $25,000.
