In amateur baseball Sunday, the Worthington Cubs grabbed an early three-run advantage, but the host Hadley Buttermakers rallied and went on to defeat their guests 7-4.
The Cubs opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning. Hadley answered with a run in the bottom of the second, but Worthington scored once more in the seventh. The Buttermakers responded with one in the bottom of that inning for a 4-2 score.
In the eighth inning, Hadley wound up scoring five times — with all those runs unearned — to complete their comeback. With the defeat, the Cubs' record dropped to 4-8 in league play and 6-9 overall.
Offensively for Worthington, Tucker Brandner connected for a home run — the second straight year he has gone yard in Hadley. Ethan My ter hit a pair of singles and added an RBI. On the mound, Justin Saufley started and tossed the first six innings, striking out four hitters and only allowing just one run.
In an abbreviated Cubs' game this past Thursday night, visiting Worthington blanked Larchwood 2-0. The action was called in the top of the fourth on account of heavy rain.
The Cubs will play their final two games of the regular season at home. They'll entertain the Pipestone A's at 2 p.m. on Sunday the 12th, then host Milroy on Sunday the 19th. Playoffs games begin that following Wednesday evening.
