The Worthington Cubs and Pipestone A's went to extra innings Wednesday night in the first round of area amateur baseball playoff action, but the Cubs were ultimately edged 3-2 by the A's in 12 innings and now trail the best-of-three series one game to none.

Tucker Brandner and Triston Sauerbrei each pitched well for Worthington in the ballgame, but the 10th-seeded Cubs now face a must-win contest against N0. 7 Pipestone at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at the Worthington Middle School field. There will be a $5 admission fee for people over the age of 10.

If necessary, game three of the series would be played at 2 p.m. Sunday in Pipestone.

In other amateur baseball playoff action Wednesday, sixth-seeded Hadley defeated No. 11 Heron Lake 13-0 in seven innings. Game three of that best-of-three series will be at 5 p.m. Saturday in Hadley.

Eighth-seeded Lakefield cruised past No. 9 Fox Lake 11-1 in eight innings. Game two there will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Fox Lake.

The top five seeds, meanwhile, have a bye to the Region 13C playoffs that begin next week. Seeded in the one through five spots are, in order: Luverne, Jackson, Fairmont, Milroy and Windom.
