County commissioners approve tax abatement, more

Among business items Tuesday in a brief meeting, the Nobles County Board of Commissioners approved a proposed property tax abatement for KJSM Investments following a public hearing.

The Worthington City Council had approved a tax abatement for the same project during its meeting Monday. KJSM Investments plans to build a two-unit condominium at 2385 and 2395 Cherrywood Lane.

Nobles County Sheriff Ryan Kruger presented a medical examiner contract agreement that commissioners approved. Medical examiners investigate deaths that occur under unusual or suspicious circumstances, perform post-mortem examinations, and in some cases initiate inquests.

Commissioners also passed a resolution in support of Nobles County Operation Green Light following a presentation by Veterans Service Officer Jim Dunn. The plan is to light up Nobles County with green lights in conjunction with Veterans Day. Dunn also informed commissioners Tuesday about an event scheduled for Nov. 18 at the Worthington Ice Arena during which the Minnesota Warriors will take on the Worthington Wombats in an exhibition hockey game beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, and a target board will be provided by the Minnesota Warriors for $2 per person.

In an additional action item, commissioners approved an increase in wages for 2024 temporary and seasonal workers from $17 an hour to $17.50 an hour. If one's working in that capacity for a second or third year, they get a 50-cent increase as well.
