Cottonwood County Emergency Management, in a flood update it issued at 1 p.m. Monday, said the record Des Moines River crest of 1969 had been broken.
The river level was recorded Monday at 24.77 feet, and the expected crest is now Wednesday at 26 feet. The county noted that "this is a very dynamic situation, and information is changing often."
People who live along the river were advised Monday afternoon to pack their cars with their most valuable belongings and prepare to evacuate, as the forecast is for the river to rise another 1.23 feet from Monday's measurement.
The city is sandbagging the electric plant out of an abundance of caution. While it isn't believed the water is going to reach it, there is potential.
A home evacuation information sheet for reference and preparation had been posted on Cottonwood County Emergency Management's Facebook page.
