City of Jackson may merge two positions together

Jackson city officials have introduced a proposal to combine two city staffing positions as part of a cost-saving measure.

According to a city press release, the city’s Personnel Committee is forwarding a recommendation to the city council that would combine the city’s Water and Street Departments. Under the proposal, a Public Works Director would be hired to oversee the two departments. City officials say the position would be posted internally and externally with the goal of having a Public Works Director hired by April 1.

In its recommendation to combine the two departments, the committee sites similarities in the departments’ general responsibilities.

The proposal will go before the full Jackson City Council for consideration at its Feb. 7 meeting.
