The Worthington City Council on Monday night approved a proposal that will allow for the rental of jet skis on Lake Okabena.
The area of the Centennial Park boat landing has been identified as the location for these rentals. Kianna Palma, who along with her mother, Angie, spoke before the council Monday, will operate the enterprise.
There will be two jet skis available for rental, and Palma said renters would need to be 18 years of age with a license to rent by themselves and be 21 to rent and take a passenger. Additionally, there would be a trailer between 22 feet and 24 feet long parked in the lot near the boat landing that would store various equipment related to the enterprise. The trailer would remain on site during the rental season, though the city could ask it to be moved for a special event.
Palma added that it’s hoped that electric scooters could also be made available for rental at the same location in the near future. She would need to return before the council to get permission for that, and it’s possible that request could be formally made during the July 24 council meeting,
The jet ski rental operation was approved on a vote of 4-1, with council member Larry Janssen opposed.
In other business Monday, the city council unanimously approved Monday a pair of items related to Nobles County Ditch 12 Phase 2 funding.
The council first approved a resolution for a Nobles County Ditch 12 agreement that confirms the city's agreeing to terms of the funding agreement that has Minnesota granting the city $250,000 with a 20% local match requirement. Council members also approved a land purchase agreement for two parcels related to the County Ditch 12 funding. One parcel of property intended for purchase is located along Minnesota 60 and is used by JBS for wastewater management. The other property, located behind the W-2's Quality Meats building along Oxford Street, is owned by Kelly Properties. That purchase would also include property behind Platinum Insultation, just east of the Kelly Properties building.
Phase two of the Nobles County Ditch 12 flood mitigation project involves stormwater diversion. As a result, 74 residences will be removed from the city’s flood plain.
Also approved by council members Monday was a civil engineering internship opportunity. The Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council had reached out to the city to inform it about a recent Worthington High School graduate who will be attending the University of Minnesota for civil engineering. The city’s engineering department plans to have this student help with updating GIS information, shadow technicians for construction field experience and assist with material testing. The opportunity will continue through Aug. 23.
In another matter, the council approved a one-year off-sale beer license for Snak Atak, which will open at the former Casey's East location on Oxford Street.
