The Worthington City Council approved during a special meeting on Wednesday afternoon a one-year lease agreement f\or the Worthington Ice Arena.

The action came after potential action on the lease agreement was tabled during the Sept. 19 council meeting after some council members asked for further information. Financial figures shared by the Worthington Hockey Association were met with approval by the council, which voted 4-1 to approve the agreement. Council member Chris Kielblock was the "no" vote.

One change from an earlier draft of the agreement is that the lease will be for a one-year trial period for the sum of $1. An earlier term of the lease called for an automatic annual renewal unless one of the parties were to give written notice.

The city’s responsibilities under the lease will include: the inside and outside maintenance of the facilities; scheduling of events; managing and staffing of any arena programs including open skate times; and maintaining all facility equipment. The Worthington Hockey Association would pay the city a lump sum fee of $75,000 for 880 hours of specified ice time, with additional hours available. The association would also assist in the instillation of the ice surface, maintain the concession stand and be responsible for everything hockey-related, other than ice maintenance.
