Bluejay football drops to 0-4; Lady Jays split in VB tourney

Rochester broke open a close game with 17 points in a little more than four minutes and the Yellow Jackets, ranked third in the nation, topped Minnesota West 36-15 Saturday at Trojan Field.

Rochester grabbed a 10-3 lead at halftime, with the Bluejay points coming on a 30-yard field goal by Triston Sauerbrei. It would remain 10-3 until late in third quarter, when a Yellow Jackets field goal, six-yard TD pass and one-yard scoring run made it a 27-3 game.

Minnesota West got its first touchdown of the afternoon on an 18-yard pass from Breyer Hieronimus to Joshua Yarbrough, but the ensuing PAT attempt was blocked and returned all the way to the Bluejay end zone for two more Yellow Jackets points. Rochester tacked on another TD with 38 seconds remaining before Hieronimus connected with Yarbrough on a 17-yard scoring play as time expired.

Rejiwon Dupree sprung loose for a couple of long runs and wound up with 96 rushing yards for the Bluejays on 14 carries. Yarbrough had four catches for 68 yards and two scores. DeShawn Clasrk had 13 total tackles for Minnesota West, while Nasim Zeidi had 12 and Aidan Bradshaw 11. Derrick Baartman added a pair of interceptions, and Bradshaw had a forced fumble and fumble recovery as the Bluejays dropped to 0-4 on the year.

The New Ulm Eagles kept the Worthington Trojans winless as they defeated visiting WHS 42-13 Friday night.

Jacari Swinea scored on a 72-yard run less than a minute and a half into the game to give Worthington a 7-0 lead, but New Ulm got a TD later in the first quarter and two more in the second to take a 21-7 halftime advantage. The Eagles would go ahead 28-7, then Ryan Lais scored from one yard out for the Trojans to make it a 28-13 game. That was it for WHS offensively, though.

Swinea ran for 181 yards on 25 carries for the Trojans, who did not complete any of their five pass attempts. Defensively, Max Ostrem led the way with 10 total tackles while Ryan Dorcey had nine and Lais eight. Brandon Bosma recovered a fumble for Worthington.
