Area Sports Roundup: Oct. 9, 2022

The Worthington Trojans football team fell to 0-6 Friday night as they lost 27-6 to visiting Fairmont.

Levi Pooley scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns for the Cardinals – one on offense and one on defense. Pooley took an interception 27 yards for a TD 3:32 into the game and later caught a six-yard scoring pass from quarterback Brendon Schmidtke with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter. A one-yard keeper by Schmitdke early in the second quarter gave Fairmont a 21-0 lead.

The Trojans got on the scoreboard with 32 seconds left before halftime when Abagotte Opiew reached paydirt on a two-yard run. The game would remain at 21-6 until about four and half minutes were left in the fourth quarter; that’s when the Cardinals’ David Maakestad added a TD on a 42-yard interception return.

Abagotte Opiew led the Trojans with 92 yards rushing, carrying 28 times. Three WHS passers combined to complete 0-of-11 throws.

Defensively, Ryan Lais had five solo tackles and three assisted tackles to lead Worthington. Wesley Widboom had six total tackles, and Cade Grimmius and Nasim Zeidi had five total tackles each. The Trojans gave up just 241 yards of total offense to Fairmont but managed just 127 themselves.
