The Worthington Trojans football team fell to 0-6 Friday night as they lost 27-6 to visiting Fairmont.


Levi Pooley scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns for the Cardinals – one on offense and one on defense. Pooley took an interception 27 yards for a TD 3:32 into the game and later caught a six-yard scoring pass from quarterback Brendon Schmidtke with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter. A one-yard keeper by Schmitdke early in the second quarter gave Fairmont a 21-0 lead.


The Trojans got on the scoreboard with 32 seconds left before halftime when Abagotte Opiew reached paydirt on a two-yard run. The game would remain at 21-6 until about four and half minutes were left in the fourth quarter; that’s when the Cardinals’ David Maakestad added a TD on a 42-yard interception return.


Abagotte Opiew led the Trojans with 92 yards rushing, carrying 28 times. Three WHS passers combined to complete 0-of-11 throws.


Defensively, Ryan Lais had five solo tackles and three assisted tackles to lead Worthington. Wesley Widboom had six total tackles, and Cade Grimmius and Nasim Zeidi had five total tackles each. The Trojans gave up just 241 yards of total offense to Fairmont but managed just 127 themselves.

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team went 1-1 Friday and 2-1 Saturday at the Jimmy John's Tournament in Marshall.


On Friday, WHS blanked Hills-Beaver Creek 25-10 25-6 and lost to Medford 21-25, 25-19, 15-11. On Saturday, the Trojans shut out Kirkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 25-18 25-16, lost to Redwood Valley 25-17 25-22 and edged Brandon-Evansville 21-25 25-12 15-4.


Ellie Weg accumulated 28 kills and Tarren Spartz 25 kills over Saturday's three matches. Addison Gerber passed for 65 set assists. In the match against Brandon-Evansville, Jayden Spartz was 21-for-21 serving with three aces and Regan Schaefer 11-for-11 serving with two aces. Tarren Spartz, meanwhile, served for seven aces against K-M-S.


The Trojans now have a record of 15-9 on the season. They play at Jackson County Central on Tuesday.

The Minnesota West football team won 14-3 on Sunday against the Dakota State JV in Madison, S.D.


Larrey Williams III had a fumble recovery for a touchdown with 8:53 left in the first quarter as Minnesota West took a 6-0 lead. A Dakota State field goal would make it a 6-3 game before a Darrick Baartman fumble recovery set up a rushing TD by ReJiwon Dupree with 6:22 left in the third quarter. A two-point conversion toss to Stephen Lewis followed; those points would close out the afternoon’s scoring.


Jonathan Altidor and Prince Budu each had interceptions for the Bluejays, whose 3-4 record includes a forfeit win over Vermillion. Minnesota West will host Minnesota State Community and Technical College on Saturday at Trojan Field.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays volleyball team lost a pair of road matches over the weekend.


On Friday night, the Lady Jays fell to Western Tech 3-1 by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22. Kennedy Buckneberg paced Minnesota West with 16 kills, 17 digs and nine-for-nine serving with one ace. Kiarra Danielson contributed 10 digs, three kills, 21 set assists and 17-of-19 serving with four aces. Also boosting the Lady Jays’ cause were: Dannyn Peterson, 13 kills; Sami Polzin, 16 digs, six kills and 14-for-14 serving; Jaenid Torres, 19 digs; and Courtney Moser, 18 set assists.


On Saturday, it was Rochester defeating Minnesota West by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 25-15. Buckneberg had 17 kills and nine digs and Danielson had seven kills, 10 digs and 29 set assists. Other contributors were: Peterson, nine kills, 16 digs and 12-of-12 serving with one ace; Polzin, seven kills, 16 digs and 13-for-13 serving; Torres, 11 digs; Kat Polzine, 17-for-17 serving and Moser, seven set assists.
