The Worthington Police Department reports that local residents should be on the lookout for fake bank calls.
The WPD says that a Worthington resident recently received a call that simply said "bank." The caller tricked the victim into disclosing banking details for her accounts by claiming someone was trying to steal money from her account and suggesting the bank employees were involved in it.
The call eventually told the victim she needed to go to the bank. When the victim said she did not have a car available, they told her they would send a car to pick her up. A person later showed up and gave her a ride to the bank.
Once at the bank, the driver attempted to get the victim to disclose her PIN number, claiming that the number was needed so the driver could get paid. The victim refused to give up the PIN number and went into the bank. It was quickly determined that this incident was a scam setup, and bank employees prevented any money from being lost by the victim.
The Worthington Police Department reminds people that a bank will never call you to verify your account information, as it already has it. Caller IDs on phone may also be faked, so those numbers can't be trusted to be accurate.
People are also encouraged to check on their loved ones and encourage them to contact you if they ever receive a call that's strange or unusual. People are also encouraged to hang up on what they suspect is a scam call and then report it to their local law enforcement.
