Tuesday morning's low temperature of 20 degrees below zero set a new record for Feb. 18, as it was one degree colder than the old record low of minus-19 recorded in 1993.
Feels-like temperatures early Tuesday hovered in the minus-40 range, and multiple schools around the region had late starts or closed their doors entirely. Tuesday's high in Worthington was forecast to rise to 2 below zero; the coldest-ever high temperature recorded on Feb. 18 in Worthington was 4 below in 2006, according to National Weather Service data.
The bitterly cold stretch is the second to hit the area in less than a week. The low temperature this past Thursday, Feb. 13 in Worthington — minus-21 — set a new record for the date.
The high Wednesday is expected to be in the low single digits above zero. Thursday is expected to have a high of nearly 10 degrees. By Monday, the high may approach 50.
