The Worthington Senior American Legion baseball team went 1-2 this weekend in a tournament in St. James, with each ballgame decided by a single run.
In a Saturday morning game, Worthington rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge Mountain Lake 6-5. Tucker Brandner singled to lead off the seventh, Chase Byrne reached on an error and Austin Gruis walked to load the bases. After Brandner scored on a passed ball, Dalton Larson connected for a two-out, two-run single to win it.
Max Ostrem had two hits in the game for Post 5 while also allowing just two hits and striking out 13 in 6 2/3 innings of pitching. All of the runs scored by Mountain Lake were unearned as Worthington had four errors in the game. Larson got the last out in the seventh to earn the pitching win.
In a second game Saturday, Post 5 collected eight hits but left several men on base in losing 1-0 to St. James. Worthington left the sacks full in the first and stranded two in multiple innings. Brandner was the hard-luck loser on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out 10.
On Sunday, Post 5's bats woke up in the later innings after falling behind 5-0, but Worthington was still edged 5-4. Post 5 got one in the sixth and three in the seventh before leaving the tying run at second base.
Manny Saravia got a pair of hits and two RBIs for Worthington, and Bryne had two hits and scored a run. Larson pitched the first five innings and allowed two earned runs; Ethan Anderson threw the final two frames while allowing one run and picking up three strikeouts.
Post 5 is back in action Monday night when it hosts Edgerton.

Second-half goals by Juani Mackrey, Benjamin Cane, Miguel Moreno, and Renan Chagas de Oliveira propelled the Worthington Community Football Club Toros to a 4-0 home victory Saturday over Garwo United of Sioux Falls.
Even the heat couldn't beat Los Toros, as Worthington finished off an unbeaten regular season with a record of 8-0-2. The Toros had clinched the U.S. Premier Soccer League NE-SD-IA Conference championship prior to Saturday's match, and now will enter the playoffs, which begin this coming Saturday. Worthington will take on Omaha Street in a match slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Trojan Field.

The Worthington Cubs amateur baseball team had been scheduled to play a road game Sunday in Pipestone, but the contest was postponed after it was determined the Cubs didn't have enough players available.
Worthington had a 10-day hiatus between games after a home loss to Hadley on June 8. It finally played again this past Wednesday night, with the Cubs getting blanked on the road 9-0 in Luverne. Easton Sauerbrei had the lone hit of the night for Worthington, a double. Daniel Casto made his pitching debut with the team and threw five solid innings in relief, allowing just one earned run.
The Cubs, who are now 5-6 on the season, will play a pair of home games this week at the Worthington Middle School field. They'll take on Fairmont first on Wednesday night, and they'll then entertain Jackson on Thursday evening.
