The Worthington Senior American Legion baseball team tuned itself up for a big weekend by defeating Edgerton 8-6 on Monday night at the Worthington Middle School Field.
Worthington got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five times. Manny Saravia was hit by a pitch and Max Ostrem followed with a single. After a Tucker Brandner double got Post 5 its first run, Chase Byrne blasted a three-run homer — Worthington's first long ball of the summer. The fifth run of the first came home on an RBI single by Logan Kerkaert that scored courtesy runner Sage Easterday.
Post 5 picked up another run in the third when Brandner reached base on a single, advanced on an Austin Gruis double and crossed the plate on a passed ball. The final two Worthington runs came in the sixth when Ostrem was hit by a pitch, Easterday reached on a passed ball, Byrne hit an RBI single and Dalton Larson added an RBI double.
Edgerton rallied in the top of the seventh inning, but Brandner came on to complete a two-out save. Kerkaert started on the hill for Post 5 and pitched the first four innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three. Ethan Anderson tossed the next 2 1/3 innings.
Brandner was 3-for-3 at the plate in the ballgame, while Gruis and Kerkaert were both 2-for-3 and Byrne 2-for-4. With the victory, Worthington improves to 6-4 on the season.
Post 5 will play four games this weekend at a tournament in Rochester, with its first three games set to be played in nearby Stewartville. Worthington will meet Rogers at 5 p.m. Friday, Stewartville at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Kasson-Mantorville at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The outcome of those games will determine a Sunday matchup.
