Worthington senior Legion baseball to play at sub-state tourney this week

The Worthington senior American Legion baseball team will enter this week's sub-state tournament after concluding regular season play with a 5-7 overall record.

Post 5 played its regular season finale July 13 and was victorious over Redwood Falls 17-4. The offensive highlight for Worthington in that game was a Kaden Khamphanh grand-slam homer in the top of the fourth inning. Logan Kerkaert earned the pitching victory, allowing three earned runs while striking out four hitters. Kerkaert also added a pair of hits while driving in two runs as well; Austin Gruis contributed two more hits for Worthington.

Post 5 will begin play at the sub-state tournament on Wednesday, when it takes on New Ulm at 4:30 p.m. at Mankato East High School. Worthington is the No. 8 seed for the tourney, while New Ulm is the top seed. Other Wednesday opening-round games include fourth-seeded New Prague vs. No. 5 Mankato National at 11:30 a.m., No. 2 Marshall vs No. 7 Waseca at 2 p.m., and No. 3 Mankato American vs. No. 6 Northfield at 7 p.m.

If Worthington beats New Ulm Wednesday, it will play the Mankato American/Northfield victor at 7 p.m. Wednesday. If Post 5 is defeated by New Ulm, it will face the Mankato American/Northfield loser in an elimination game at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The tournament continues through Saturday.
