Worthington Legion team goes 2-1 in Crookston

Worthington’s Senior Legion baseball team went 2-1 in a tournament in Crookston over the weekend. Post 5 advanced to the championship game, which had been scheduled for Sunday but was rained out.


In Worthington’s first game of the tourney Wahpeton, N.D. scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and won 8-1 on Friday. Tristan Sauerbrei had two of Worthington’s five hits, and Tate Gaul scored the lone run. Post 5 made a total of five errors in a game that followed a more-than-six-hour road trip.


On Saturday, Worthington routed Crookston 16-4 as Jake Brandner got the pitching win while striking out nine hitters and also hit an inside-the-park home run. Also hitting home runs were Mason Schutz and Tommy Lais. Sauerbrei had four hits in the game, Coy Turner had three hits and Brandner, Gaul and Lais had two hits each. Lais and Gaul each drove in three runs.


Worthington toppled Bemidji 12-6 in its second game Saturday. Lais has three hits and also homered and Brandner and Gaul added two hits each. Lais had three RBIs and Gaul two. On defense, Cooper McCoy made a diving catch in right field to save three runs.


Post 5 is now 15-4 on the season and plays at Marshall on Tuesday.
