Worthington Legion squad finishes regular season

The Worthington American Legion baseball team played its final game of the regular season Tuesday, losing at Luverne by a score of 11-3.

Post 5 started quickly, snaring a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning thanks to a couple of bases-loaded walks and an RBI single from Ben Mahlberg. Luverne, though, quickly countered with six runs in the bottom of the first, with Worthington coach Austin Nunez stating that poor defense behind starting pitcher Tucker Brandner cost his team during that Luverne rally. Sloppy play also hurt Post 5 in a four-run fifth inning for Luverne, Nunez said.

With Tuesday’s loss, Worthington finished its regular-season schedule with a 5-8 record. Nunez said a seeding meeting for the upcoming eight-team Sub State Tournament is scheduled to take place next Wednesday. That double-elimination tournament will get underway July 24 in New Ulm.
