Windom grabs opening round win in state amateur baseball tourney

The Windom Pirates advanced to the round of 16 in the Class C state amateur baseball tournament with a 6-2 victory Saturday in Hutchinson over the Elrosa Saints.


Luke Gilbertson smacked a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Pirates the lead for good at 3-2. Windom had jumped out to a 2-0 lead earlier, but Elrosa got single runs in the second and third to tie things up.


Collin Lovell picked up the win for the Pirates, surrendering just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts over five scoreless innings of relief. Gilbertson started the game on the mound and allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Gilbertson and Quintin Tietz led Windom with two hits each.


The Pirates improved their record to 24-1 with their 22nd consecutive triumph. They will next meet the Howard Lake Orphans at 4 p.m. Aug. 24 in Browntown.

In high school girls tennis Friday, it was host MACCRAY over Worthington 7-0.


Two of the matches went the full three sets. At No. 3 singles, MACCRAY’s Sarah Seehusen beat the Trojans' Isabella Kouame, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. At No. 2 doubles, the pairing of Lilyanne Pauling and Anna Janssen held off Ashley Esparza and Maria Shwe of WHS, 6-1, 5-7, 10-7.


The next closest match was at No. 1 singles, where Kah Blu Moo of the Trojans lost the second set 7-5 after dropping the opener 6-2.


Worthington will next play on Tuesday afternoon in Marshall.
