Windom boys eke out basketball win over Worthington, 54-52

The visiting Windom Eagles boys basketball team, which defeated Worthington by 18 points just last week, played a neck-and-neck game with the Trojans on Tuesday night and earned a 54-52 victory.

The Eagles, who won their fourth in a row and improved to 6-6 on the season, led 30-18 in the latter stages of the first half. Worthington, though, got back-to-back 3-pointers from Caleb Meyer and Isaiah Schroeder, followed by 2-point buckets from Kason Spartz, Austin Kinser and Thet Tay, to get the score to 30-30 by halftime.

Tetlouch Gach opened the second half with a 3 for the Trojans, and Worthington went up 39-34 on a trey from Fino Noeno. Windom senior Elliot Meyer, though, later put the Eagles back up for good when his three-point play made it 43-41, and he then added another basket for a 45-41 score.

The Trojans called timeout following a missed Windom free throw with 1.4 seconds to go, but failed to get off a final shot as the Eagles sealed the two-point victory. Elliot Meyer had 27 for Windom and Henry Visker added 11. For WHS, Caleb Meyer had 14 points and Schroeder 12.

In the girls game played prior to the boys matchup, Windom's Anja Nielsen drained eight 3-pointers and tallied all 28 of her points in the first half alone as the Eagles led 72-22 at the break and ultimately won 92-51. Claire Schultz had 11 points for the Trojans, and Alaina Feit contributed 10.

The Fairmont Cardinals boys hockey team came into the Worthington Ice Arena and rolled to an 8-1 triumph over the Trojans on Tuesday night.

Fairmont tallied the first two goals of the game, but WHS got an unassisted goal from Dominic Pavelko just 13 seconds after the second Cardinals' goal to draw the Trojans within one.

Unfortunately for Worthington, that would be the last goal for the night. Fairmont scored four times in a roughly two-minute stretch of the second period and then added two more in the third to drop Worthington to 2-11 on the season. Gavin Kester and Jase Meade had two goals apiece for Fairmont, which is now 5-6.

The Cardinals outshot the Trojans 32-18 in the game. Tyson Petersen was in net for Worthington.

In girts hockey, WHS lost by an identical 8-1 score at Fairmont. The Cardinals led 1-0 after the first period, then added three goals in the second before Chloe Joens scored unassisted for the Trojans at the 11:59 mark. Fairmont picked up one more goal in the second period and added three in the third.

With the loss, Worthington drops to 6-9 on the season. The Trojan boys host New Ulm on Thursday night while the girls play at the Eagles.
