Windom Area rallies past Worthington in girls hockey

Updated: Dec 9, 2023

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team took a 2-0 lead Thursday night, but the visited Windom Area Eagles battled back and rallied for a 5-2 victory to post their third win of the season and keep the Trojans winless.

Worthington, which almost scored its first triumph of the season Tuesday – losing in overtime – grabbed its two-goal advantage early. Taylor Nickel scored up close on a pass from Chloe Joens at the 2:51 mark of the opening period for a 1-0 edge, and eighth-grader Breeta Johnson added a goal at 6:12 to make it a 2-0 game. Meanwhile, eighth-grade goalie Macie Mahlberg made saves on all 10 shots she faced in the first period.

Windom Area, though, quickly grabbed the momentum in the second period. Marenna Bang scored 50 seconds in on an assist from Marissa Becker, and Bang scored again at 3:56 to make it 2-2. Ella Dockter followed with a goal at 5:28 on an assist from Ashlyn Koch to give the Eagles the lead, and the Trojans from there would do a good job in holding Windom Area to just those three goals in the period as the puck remained almost exclusively on the Worthington end of the ice.

The Eagles tacked on goals from Becker and Regan Haugen in third period --- Lyvia McManigle and Addison Schumacher had the respective assists – and the Trojans failed to capitalize on a pair of two-person power play advantages. WHS was outshot 31-12 in the game; Mahlberg finished with 26 saves.
