WHS track and field teams are off and running at sectional meet

The Worthington Trojans boys and girls track and field teams competed in the first of two days of competition at the Section 2AAA Championship Meet at Gustavus Adolphus at St. Peter.
In the boys competition, Tetlouch Gach did well in the preliminaries of both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Gach, a WHS junior, was first overall in the 110 hurdles prelims with a time of 15.44 seconds. He was also fourth in the 300 hurdles prelims.
Jacari Swinea qualified for Worthington in the 100-meter prelims, as he wound up in ninth place on Wednesday. In the triple jump, Welbake Morke was sixth and was a state qualifier with a leap of 42 feet, 4.75 inches. Permeye Okony was right behind him in seventh.
In the 3200 meters, the Trojans' Fanuel Wolday finished third. In the discus, Christian Kleve was 13th on Wednesday but attained a personal record.
In girls action Wednesday, Grace Bates was sixth in the long jump for the highest placing for the Trojans. In the 400-meter prelims, Emily Dahlquist was 15th and set a personal record. In the 800 meters, Kenadie Thiner was 21st while also establishing a PR.
Competition in the second day of the meet takes place beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at Gustavus Adolphus. Worthington is one of 11 high schools participating in the event.

The Worthington Trojans' baseball team traveled to play at top-seeded Mankato East on Wednesday night and was blanked 11-0 in the opening round of the Section 2AAA Tournament.
As the tournament is double-elimination, WHS will play again at least one more time on Saturday. The Trojans will meet fifth-seeded Albert Lea — which lost to No. 4 St. Peter 3-1 on Wednesday — at 2 p.m. at Mueller Park in New Ulm. A win in that contest would give Worthington another game at 5 p.m.
In Section 3A baseball Wednesday in Milroy, No. 1 South seed Murray County Central was defeated by No. 3 South Seed Yellow Medicine East 7-5. The Rebels play an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday against Lac qui Parle Valley in Milroy. Minneota also eliminated Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian, 7-4.
In Section 3AA softball in Marshall, No. 1 South seed Jackson County Central edged No. 1 North seed Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 3-2. If the Huskies top the Tigers again Thursday, they'll capture the section title. Dassel-Cokato also eliminated Windom Area 1-0 on Wednesday
In Section 3A softball in Marshall, Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian beat Yellow Medicine East 4-1 and Lac qui Parle Valley 10-6 to advance to a championship matchup Thursday against Wabasso. They'll need to beat the Rabbits twice to win the tournament.
