WHS gymnastics team, individuals compete at state

The Worthington Trojans placed eighth Friday at the Minnesota State Class A Gymnastics Team Meet in St. Paul.
Worthington, which advanced to the state meet for the 11th consecutive year, finished Friday's team competition with a cumulative score 132.225. Total scores by event for WHS were 33.375 on the vault, 32.075 on the bars, 33.125 on the beam and 33.650 on the floor.
Detroit Lakes captured the state class A team title with a total score of 145.625.
On Saturday, four Trojans competed Saturday as part of the state Class A Individual Meet. Lucy Thier placed 21st for Worthington in the all-around. She was 37th on the bars, 37th on the beam, 42nd on the floor and 44th on the vault.
Worthington's Jada Milbrath qualified individually in two events — she finished 17th on the bars and 22nd on the beam -- and Kenadie Thiner was 37th on the beam. The Trojans' Marley Phomsatry was 43rd on the vault. Isabella Lazzu had also qualified for the Trojans on the vault, but was injured in Friday warmups and unable to compete.

At the Section 3AA individual wrestling tournament Saturday, Worthington 189-pounder Chase Byrne qualified for state by finishing first in his weight class. Byrne won his championship match by major decision and now has a record of 40-7 on the year.
Among the other Trojans competing Saturday were: Dominic Larson, fifth at 107 pounds; Dalton Larson, sixth at 152; and Brayden Raymo, sixth at 172.
At the Section 3A individual wrestling state qualifiers. JCC had Kayden Eller take first at 114, Kyler Thier place first at 127; Isaac Rodriguez take second at 121; Dallas Gossen finish second at 139; and Ryan Haley come in second at 189. The top two placers in each weight class qualified for state.
Advancing to state for Adrian Area were: Jackson Jenniges, first at 152 pounds; Moe Erdman, second at 127; Travis Weiss, second at 133; Charger Erlandson, second at 145; and Roberto Hernandez, second at 215.
Heading to state from Fulda-Murray County Central will be: Quintin Lewis, first at 160; Carson Klein, first at 189; Isaiah Wolske, second at 172; and Colby Kesteloot, second at 285.
The state wrestling tournament will be Thursday through Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays overcame a slow start Saturday afternoon and went on to post a 73-48 women's basketball victory over visiting Ridgewater in their regular-season finale.
Sadie Krahling led the Lady Jays with 21 points and while adding four steals. Rhea Tucker had 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, and Katrina Schutz contributed 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Ava Parrish also scored 10 points, and Maddie Kamm pulled down 11 rebounds in the first half alone and finished the game with 12.
Minnesota West shot just 30% from the floor in the first half, but wound up at 38% overall. Ridgewater sank just 24% of its shots from the field and was outrebounded by the Lady Jays 58-40. Now 16-8 overall and 8-1 in MCAC South play, second-ranked Minnesota West will play in the regional tournament next weekend -- with a berth to advance to the national tournament — in the mix. The Lady Jays are defending national champs.
The Minnesota West men lost a chance to advance to regionals, as they were beaten 101-82 by Ridgewater Saturday. The Bluejays and Warriors were deadlocked at 38 at halftime, but Ridgewater exploded for 63 points in the second half. Zackery Rygg had team highs of 21 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota West, while Karasharo Ojulo added 12 points and Deondre Wallace 10. The Bluejays ended their season with an overall record of 19-10 and a 5-7 mark in conference play.

In Section 3A South girls basketball Saturday in Worthington, it was: Hills-Beaver Creek 60, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 43; Westbrook-Walnut Grove 41, Edgerton 29; Adrian-Ellsworth 48, Murray County Central 42; and Southwest Minnesota Christian 65, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 47. H-BC meets W-WG and Adrian-Ellsworth takes on Southwest Minnesota Chrisitan Tuesday night at WHS.
