WHS girls golfers win second meet in two days with season-best score

The Worthington Trojans' girls golf team earned its best nine-hole score of the season Friday as they beat host Windom Area 203-213.


The Trojans' Claire Meyer had the lowest score of all individuals, as she shot a 42. Rounding out the counting rounds for WHS were Callie Rosenberg (50), Ava Schutz (55) and Claire Mahlberg (56). Also competing for the varsity were Ellie Drost and Peyton Nickel, who each had 60s.


In boys golf, it was Windom defeating Worthington 158-169. Landon Pillatzki of the Eagles carded a round of 35 to win medalist honors; the Trojans' Spenser Nickel was next at 39.


Besides Nickel, Ryan Dorcey (41), Cameron Krommendyk (41) and Tyson Petersen (48) had scoring rounds for WHS. Also playing for the Trojans were Gerret Larson (52) and Ben Mahlberg (53).


The Worthington High girls golf team plays Monday in the Big South Conference Championship Meet at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club. The boys compete in the conference meet Tuesday at Dacotah Ridge.

The Worthington High boys tennis team will open play in the Section 2AA Tournament on Tuesday. The seventh-seeded Trojans will play at No. 2 Prior Lake in a match slated to start at 4 p.m.


WHS played its final regular season match on Thursday at St. James and was beaten 7-0. Each of the matches was decided in straight sets.

Minnesota West finished as the runner-up at the Region 13A softball tournament on Friday in Brainerd.


The Lady Jays avenged a one-loss to Minnesota North College-Itasca in the tourney on Thursday by scoring nine runs in the first inning Friday and beating the Vikings 11-3. Minnesota West was then defeated by regional champ Central Lakes 5-1 later in the day.


The Lady Jays' season concluded with an 11-8 record.

The Worthington High softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday in Jackson, losing to Jackson County Central 15-3 in five innings and 18-7 to Albert Lea.


The Trojans only managed three hits against the Huskies, but picked up 12 in the matchup with the Tigers. Emma Hietbrink had a home run, double and single while driving in four runs. Hannah McNab, Madi Polz and Katy Welch each contributed two hits for WHS, which now has a record of 5-10.

The WHS baseball team went up 1-0 early but allowed two unearned runs in third and three more runs in the fifth, losing to visiting Waseca 5-2 on Saturday.


Chase Byrne doubled and scored for the Trojans, and Wilson Mahlberg had a hit and scored a run. Manny Saravia and Dawson Svalland had the other hits for Worthington, now 2-10 this season. Max Ostrem threw five innings for the Trojans, surrendering six hits and three earned runs while walking four and striking out seven. Dalton Larson retired all six batters he faced.
