WHS downed by top-seeded Mankato West in Section 2AAA baseball tournament

The Worthington Trojans opened play Wednesday in the Section 2AAA baseball tournament and suffered a 15-0, five-inning loss to top-seeded Mankato West.

 

The top-seeded Scarlets dominated the game as pitcher Wilson Magers fired a perfect game, allowing no Trojan hitters to reach base. Magers struck out 10 WHS hitters in the ballgame.

 

Mankato West got one run in the first, four in the second, six in the third and four more in the fourth to complete its scoring. The Trojans, now 6-14 on the season, committed three errors on the evening and dropped into the tournament’s consolation bracket. WHS will play a loser-out game at 2 p.m. Saturday against as-yet-unknown opponent.

 

Also in Section 2AAA action Wednesday, it was No. 4 Albert Lea 2, fifth-seeded St. Peter 1; second-seeded Mankato East 4, No. 7 Jordan 0; and third-seeded Marshall 5, No. 6 New Ulm 1.

In Section 3AA baseball scheduled for today, Jackson County Central will play at Luverne at 5 p.m. in a south subsection semifinal. Windom will play at Fairmont at 5 p.m. in a south subsection second-round game.

 

In Section 3A baseball, Adrian-Ellsworth and Murray County Central will meet at 7 p.m. in Milroy in an elimination bracket quarterfinal.

The Worthington Community Football Club fell behind by three goals early, trailed 4-1 at the half, and wound up falling 7-1 Wednesday to a strong St. Paul Blackhawks team in UPSL soccer action at Trojan Field.

 

The Toros came into the match in second place in the Midwest West Division, but with the setback fell to 4-3 on the season. The Blackhawks are 2-1-1.

 

The Toros have now fallen in two consecutive matches after suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat on the road Saturday against the Minneapolis City SC. Worthington, which played to a 2-2 halftime draw, got goals from Miguel Perdomo, Juan Mackrey and Jonathan Banegas.


The Toros have another tough challenge coming up Sunday as they’ll take on the first-place St. Croix Soccer Club at 7 p.m. at Stillwater High School. Worthington has one more home match remaining; it’s at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 against the Austin Villa FC.

The Worthington Cubs amateur baseball team played in Milroy this past Friday night and was defeated 11-1 by the Yankees. Brock Bruns pitched well for four innings. Triston Sauerbrei, Kent Lais and Tyler Linder each had hits.

 

Worthington slipped to 0-4 on the season with the loss. The Cubs hosted Heron Lake on Wednesday night and have a pair of home games Sunday --  at 2 p.m. against Pipestone and 4:30 p.m. against Lakefield.
