WHS boys soccer to play Thursday in Eden Prairie

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team has received the No. 4 seed in the Section 2AA state tournament and will play a quarterfinal match at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against fifth-seeded and 2022 state champion DeLaSalle at Eden Prairie High School.


Should the Trojans, 17-2 this season, win on Thursday, they will compete in a state semifinal match at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1 against either top-seeded Orono or Northfield at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The state championship match is set for 12:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team will open play in the Section 2AAA tournament on Wednesday night as the seventh seed and play at No. 2 Mankato West at 7 p.m. The Trojans are 13-15 on the season, while the Scarlets are 14-9. Marshall is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will host New Ulm Wednesday evening.


In other high school volleyball postseason action, Windom is the No. 2 seed in the Section 3AA tourney and will entertain Pipestone at 7 p.m. Friday. Third-seeded Jackson County Central, meanwhile, will host St. James, and No. 4 Luverne plays visiting Fairmont.


The volleyball action in Section 3A will begin Monday night as No. 8 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton tangles with No. 9 Hills-Beaver-Creek and seventh-seeded Murray County Central meets No. 10 Red Rock Central. The Rebels-Falcons winner will play at second-seeded Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at 7 p.m. Thursday. Other matches that night include: Monday’s T-M-B vs. H-BC winner at top-seed Russell-Tyler-Ruthton; fifth-seed Southwest Minnesota Christian at No. 4 Adrian-Ellsworth; and No. 3 Westbrook-Walnut Grove hosting No. 6 Edgerton.

The Minnesota West football team had its highest point total of the season Sunday, but the defense allowed its most points of the year as the Blue Jays were defeated on the road by the North Dakota State College of Science Wildcats, 45-21, in the MCAC playoffs. While NDSCS improved to 7-2 this fall, Minnesota West finished the 2023 season with a record of 0-7.

Lexi Schreuers picked up her 1,000th set assist of the season Friday and the Minnesota West Lady Jays captured a 3-0 volleyball victory over St. Cloud Tech. Game scores were 25-22. 25-20, 25-23.


Ella Hesse had 12 kills and 10 digs to boost Minnesota West. Shawna Rogers had 15 digs, Kiarra Danielson contributed 10 digs and eight ace serves and Ella Kamrud had seven kills. Hattie DeVries and Kat Polzine added five kills apiece, while Schreurs passed for 31 set assists.


The Lady Jays will open their postseason at 3 p.m. Friday at Anoka against Central Lakes. Minnesota West is 23-8 on the season.
